Weekend Warming

Featured

What a week. Between super frigid temps and hideous headlines, it’s a miracle any of us have managed to get out of bed, head to work and function in the world at large. But blissfully the weekend is upon us and as far as we’re concerned, there’s no reason to leave the house. It’s the perfect time to light a fire, hunker down and get cozy with loved ones. There’s a fine line between hibernating and nesting, and we’re in favor of both. These must-haves are sure to make the most of a reclusive weekend — just don’t blame us when you don’t want to go to the office on Monday morning.

Screens as mesmerizing as the flames they’re shielding…

Luxe, snug and cozy throws…

A chic tray to deliver a warming drink — and we don’t mean hot cocoa…

Embrace the Blues

Featured

The problem with winter is that it’s long, too long. We all know the post-holiday letdown that hits you after naked trees are left on the curb, lights are unplugged, sour egg nog is poured down the drain and all you’re left with is the 10-lb weight gain brought on by a few too many pieces of buche de noel. No wonder you’re depressed!  Winter blues are normal and arrive like clockwork at the end of January when the realization that you’ll be zipping up that puffy coat for the foreseeable future hits you.  But blues don’t have to be bad!  Think of all the happy things that are blue. A sunny sky, the Caribbean sea, juicy blueberries, the eyes of your beloved… We have gorgeous accents in hues ranging from the palest aqua to the darkest navy — all of which are sure to make you smile, and none of which will ever give you the blues.  OK, bundle up, only 56 days till spring.  Hey, that’s not too bad!

If It’s January, It’s Market Time

Guess where we are. Here’s a hint, if it’s January, we’re at market! The question is, in what city? Well, we’re in Atlanta till the 13th, but the week after next we’ll be in Las Vegas. Nothing like starting the New Year off with a bang! We love it and what we love even more is debuting the latest additions to our collection. This month we have over 50 introductions to share with you. Here’s just a tempting taste:

Boxes on Boxing Day

Featured

We hope you’re still enjoying the holiday season and recovering from a very merry Christmas. However, in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other Commonwealth nations, as well as Norway and Sweden, today is all about sales and shopping — it’s Boxing Day!  Though there are a few different theories about the genesis of the term, back in the 1600s, it was a custom for tradespeople to receive “Christmas boxes” of money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas. Along the same lines, the servants of the wealthy, who had to work on Christmas Day, would get the following day off to be with their families. The employers would give each servant a box to take home containing gifts, money, leftover food etc.  Who knew? While we wouldn’t recommend using our gorgeous boxes for carting around yesterday’s rib roast or fruit cake, they’re perfect for keeping that newly received bauble or special something safely tucked away. Happy Boxing Day!

Giving and Receiving

It’s the holidays, a merry time of good cheer, joy, festive holly jolly and spreading the love.  Oh, and gifts! We’re not immune to feeling extra cheerful when we receive a little present of our own and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be included in Cottages & Gardens 2014 Holiday Gift Guide.   As always, we applaud their amazing eye and totally agree, the Yvonne leather and brass tray makes a fab gift for the holiday hostess.

Survival of the Feast

Featured

Well, it’s here! The holiday season has struck and struck hard. Thanksgiving is, well, tomorrow, and Christmas is only weeks away. So much celebrating, so little time. And while most of us embark on this first weekend of feasting, we will likely face the reality that it’s not going to be all-Norman-Rockwell, all-the-time. There are bound to be hiccups of long-simmering resentments, or deep-seated conflict,

Chic Conflict

Featured

Everybody knows that a little conflict keeps things interesting.  Take the movies.  Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl.  If the boy didn’t lose the girl (the conflict), no one would care that he got her, right?  It’s the same thing with food.  Who doesn’t love the yin and yang of a sweet and salty snack?  The warring flavors of a chocolate covered pretzel play against each other and in the process, the whole tastes even better than the parts.  Whether you’re wearing an edgy motorcycle jacket over a super feminine dress or playing up a nude lip with a smoky eye, opposing elements always translate into great style.  That’s one of the reasons we love our new onyx and metal pieces.  We’ve topped a man-made base with a natural, organic surface to deliver a totally of-the-moment statement that works with any decor scheme.  Now that’s what we call contrast-chic!

Thom Filicia’s Picks

Featured

Back in the day the only time anyone of a certain pedigree appeared in the press was in the form of a wedding announcement or an obituary. Any other publicity was considered gauche. How times have changed! In this look-at-me world of selfies, likes and followers, it’s hard to be noticed without flagging down some online traffic. Whether through Instagram, blogging or Facebook, it seems there’s no such thing as bad publicity. While we’ve never been comfortable drawing attention to ourselves, we can’t help showing off just a little when someone else gives us some love. In this case, that someone is none other than celebrity designer, Thom Filicia!  We completely agree with the fab ideas he shared with HuffPo for transitioning a home’s decor into fall (read all about it here), and we couldn’t be more excited about getting a little shout-out in the form of two of his favorite picks!  This is what we’d call good publicity.  OK, now we’ll stop tooting our own horn…we wouldn’t want to be gauche.

Office Style

One of the things we miss about our school days is that week before the first bell when we made the big shopping trip to the stationery store (yes, we pre-date Staples and Target) and stocked up on all the must-haves and please-can-we-haves to ensure we started the academic year off right. What was better than filling a new pencil case with, well, pencils, along with felt tip and ballpoint pens, a tiny plastic sharpener and a rainbow eraser? While most of us won’t be heading back to the classroom anytime soon, we can still give our work spaces some oomph. We love an organized home office personalized with desk accessories that lend a little style where it’s often badly needed. Our standing magnifiers add a fabulous touch of vintage-chic and offer our aging eyes a little break from the small-print squint — they’re even more exciting than a new three-ring binder.

Seasonal Fruits

Featured

Is there anything better than a ripe, juicy peach?  We wait all year for summer’s bounty, counting the weeks until farmer’s markets display our favorite berries, nectarines, figs, plums — well, you get the point.  How quickly that sweet spot passes.  Not only are we facing the last weekend of this season of fun, we’re also anticipating the waning availability of fresh, locally grown summer fruit.  But after indulging in some produce-based pouting, we reminded ourselves of all that autumn has to offer.  Besides crisp, cool nights and fabulous fall foliage, there are fruits and veggies that are wonderful in their own way.  Apple pie a la mode?  Pears poached in lush red wine?  Roasted butternut squash?  Yes, please!  While they certainly wouldn’t taste very good, our shiny metal apples, pears and squash are just as gorgeous as their natural inspirations and add a touch of cheerful whimsy wherever they are placed.  So, enjoy your last few peaches, but don’t be sad, what awaits is just as good.  Have a happy and safe Labor Day!

What Makes for Cool, Sophisticated Style

Featured

Cool, sophisticated style. Either you have it or you don’t. It’s an attitude, a spirit — a self-assuredness that never apologizes. It’s a whiff of mystery mixed with devil-may-care. It purrs “come hither” as much as it hisses, “keep your distance.” But most of all, it never shouts. It doesn’t need to. It knows it’s making a bold statement without being garish. And while it’s an aspiration for most, for the few who have it, it’s just who they are. No one was as cool and sophisticated as Lauren Bacall. Her inarguable mystique lasted for eight decades

Summer Hurricanes

Featured

Wait a minute, is it really August? How did that happen? Summer always whips right by and before you know it it’s back-to-school, back-to-work, back-to-reality. Well, we don’t want to waste another second — this is a wake-up call! It’s time to get out there and have a summery summer. We’ve been pretty lucky weather-wise. It hasn’t been too hot, there haven’t been any big storms or hurricanes, so there are no excuses. (Although we may have just jinxed ourselves. Don’t blame us if there’s a heat wave next week.) The best part of summer is hanging with friends outside, eating something delish

and catching up. And speaking of hurricanes, our stunning selection sheds the perfect amount of candlelight on any social situation. What we also love is that come fall, hurricanes become showstopping containers for showcasing all those seashells just waiting to be collected — then a summery summer can be enjoyed all year long.

The weather is still figuring itself out, kids are still in school and nature’s bounty has yet to ripen to juicy goodness. Summer House Gifts

Featured

Welcome to summer!  This weekend marks the real start of the season we’ve all been waiting for and we can’t wait.  No matter how old you are, there is a carefree quality to the next three months and the best thing to do is enjoy!  Of course summer also means entertaining and being entertained.  As a guest, you should be helpful, respectful and always bring a gift that shows your host how much you appreciate them.  Sure, some people like to bring wine or food, but we think that’s risky.  Wine is very personal and if your hosts know what they like your bottles will just be regifted.  Food is dangerous these days what with all the nut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free considerations.  We vote for a house gift that is for just that, the house.  Presumably you know your hosts well enough to have been to their home before, you know their taste, style etc.  So just make sure you make your bed, help with the dinner dishes and come with something fabulous that tells your hosts how well you know them and how happy you are to be their guest.  Here are some of our faves.

What About Dad?

You know when you hear something that you can’t believe but when you think about it, you kind of can? That happened yesterday with the news that our Mother’s Day vs Father’s Day spending is out of whack. Meaning, we only shell 70% of the amount we earmark for our moms on our dads. That is not very nice! Are dads 30% less important than moms? Do we love them that much less? Of course not. But there’s something about celebrating the tireless devotion of mothers that seems to merit more attention than their male counterparts. Well, not with us. Our collection is filled with objets sure to thrill any type of dad. From the car aficionado to the oenophile, the game player to the wise advice-giver, we have them all covered. Summer Whites

Featured

Being a creative group, we like to think of ourselves as the types who march to the beat of our own drum, who push the envelope, who believe that rules are meant to be broken (and who overuse cliches).  And to some extent, all of that is true.  But just like regular folk, there are certain adages that are hard to break once they’ve been instilled in your brain. You know, like waiting a half hour after you eat before jumping into a swimming pool.  Who came up with that one?  But on the other hand, who wants to risk finding out what might happen if you do a cannonball after gorging on a hamburger, fries and a shake? And what about waiting until Memorial Day before wearing white?  It’s pretty hard to pull off white jeans in the middle of winter — but we’re happy to report that the first official white weekend of the season is finally upon us! Break out your crispest, cleanest white threads and say hello to summer!  Our collection is peppered with fabulous white pieces, from vases to lamps, sculpture to accent furniture, and we can’t possibly pick our faves.  But you can…

Mother’s Day Vases

Let’s see, it’s finally May, the weather has been cooperating, the birds have flow north for the summer, allergies have taken hold and the second Sunday of the month is only two days away.  All this can mean only one thing–it’s Mother’s Day! We believe in celebrating all mother figures, from birth moms to step-moms to devoted aunts.  And of course, what better way to show a little love than with the season’s bounty of blooms.  We love a floral tribute and our new collection of white vases provides the perfect neutral juxtaposition to a bountiful bouquet of colorful blossoms.  Short, tall, wide or slim, these vessels meld seamlessly into any decor and are sure to make a mama feel supremely special.  Happy Mother’s Day!

Inspired Hurricanes

Featured

One of the many benefits of traveling as much as we do is the opportunity for inspiration.  We find it in both likely and unlikely places – from the glimpse of greenery after days of decidedly urban scenery, to a vibrant outdoor market filled with colorful comestibles to the light specific to a southeast Asian sunset, we try to soak up as much local color as we can.  Recently a jeweled cuff caught our eye and we couldn’t get it out of our minds.  Being bombarded by so many sights, smells and sounds it’s hard for any one thing to make an impression strong enough to stand out – but when it does, attention must be paid.  We knew we wanted to interpret the cuff in a way that felt organic to us, and with these hurricanes, we think we did just that.  Their detail is jewel-like but their function is real, and best of all, they’re stunning. Don’t you agree?

Leather Transitions

Are you having a hard time finding something to wear?  It’s the modern age-old dilemma — when you’re in a transitional season, it’s a challenge to find pieces that work in the colder morning hours as well as they do during a sunny lunch break or a rainy evening commute.  Whether you’re talking fashion or home furnishings, we think leather is an excellent choice for bridging the seasonal gap and the latest additions to our collection reflect that.  From tables and trays to hurricane lamps and boxes, these leather accents manage to meld the rich gravitas of winter with the bright whimsy of summer — perfect for the season that falls right in between.

Clearly Cocktail Tables

Featured

There’s nothing like the first day of spring to encourage a feeling of renewal.  You want to shed the layers, both physical and emotional, and move towards the warmer months feeling refreshed, invigorated and recharged.  Those words all mean sort of the same thing, but the point is obvious: a clear, new outlook is in order.  It’s the time for spring cleaning, assessing what’s working and what could use a little tweaking. Our acrylic cocktail tables follow that directive perfectly. While they’re completely of-the-moment, their chic lines are totally classic, enhancing any existing décor.  They perk up a seating area with just the right balance of subtle and noticeable without screaming for attention – which is exactly the kind of change you want to make this time of year.  Happy spring!

Library Chic

Featured

Nothing says luxury like a beautiful library.  Okay, that might be an overstatement, but in many ways it’s true.  It means that a home has a surplus of rooms.  Once you’ve accounted for bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room, the rest is gravy.  So here is this extra room which is sure to have comfortable seating, great reading lights and shelves filled with one of the most personal of home accents: books.  Whether fiction or non, what you are reading reveals who you are.  At the same time, there are those who furnish their libraries thinking only of color and design, as in they buy books by the yard (really, it’s a “thing”) to coordinate with their palette or only go for leather bindings or tiny examples of classics etc.  They choose a theme and a scheme.  We are major readers but with all the traveling we do, our Kindles are the way we, and so many others roll these days.  Anyone who has seen the film Her noticed that the shelves in Joaquin Phoenix’s sometime-in-the-future pad were bare.  It’s a shame because books can bring a space to life.  Which is why our marble book collection is at once so modern, relevant and chic.  No matter where they’re placed, they call subtle attention to themselves and remind us all of one of life’s most fundamental pleasures – diving into a great read.

Oscar, Oscar, Oscar

Featured

Congratulations movie fans, the big night is almost here!  After warming up with the Golden Globes and the SAG awards, it’s finally time for Oscar.  We’re so excited. Romance, comedy, action and drama, we love them all. And while enjoying a flick from the comfort of home (preferably curled up on a Weiman sofa with one of our faux fur throws) is one of our favorite ways to spend a winter evening, there is nothing like sitting in a darkened theater and watching a story unfold. The vastness of the screen and the all-encompassing sound – that’s the way films were meant to be experienced.  And in a nod to the legacy of cinema, our collection includes pieces that pay homage to the golden age.  From decorative projectors to lights that evoke old-time movie sets, they’re an award-winning way to bring the magic of movies home.  And the Oscar goes to…we can’t wait to find out!

You get to avoid flight cancellations, jet lag, lost luggage, tourista and the list goes on. But to ward off any potential jealousy, it’s important to make staying home feel almost as special as a vacation. That’s one of the many reasons why we love the latest additions to our selection of trays. What says “special” more than lifting a glass of champers off of Brighton? How about sinking into a House of Cards binge-watch with your favorite take-out dinner perched on Wilshire? Trays instantly take the ordinary to the extraordinary. All You Need Is Love

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Whether you’ve been pierced by Cupid’s arrow or are happily single, today is the day for love.  Ironically, so many people have a love/hate relationship with the holiday and for anyone who has nursed a broken heart on February 14th, it’s easy to understand why flipping the calendar to the 15th might make life a little easier.  But you don’t have to be “in” love to appreciate a day devoted to warm feelings. Maybe there are dear friends who deserve to know how much they mean to you.  Maybe it’s been awhile since you told your family that you adore them.  Or maybe you want to show yourself some appreciation with a little treat or splurge.  No matter what your personal scenario is, we think everyone needs to give St. Valentine a little respect.  Our knots and rings pay tribute to the unbroken bond and unending circle of love in such stunning simplicity.  And of course the “x” and “o” of tic tac toe translates to hugs and kisses.  So don’t be a hater — spread some love today!

Clear As Ice

You know how when you’re seated next to a boring person at a dinner or on a plane or in a waiting room, the talk always turns to weather?  Well, at the risk of seeming like the dullest of the dull, these wintry conditions have gotten totally out of hand!  You’d probably be hard pressed to find someone whose life hasn’t been impacted in some way by the myriad of storms — whether through a ripple-effect of flight cancellations, power outages that make working from home impossible or trying to occupy kids whose glee over a snow day is matched only by your disappointment.  Simply put, It’s been a really tough winter.  And this week the east coast was lucky enough to have an ice storm–ugh!  The only good to come out of all of this is that for just a day or so the snow drifts and icicles are so sparkly and incandescent.  There’s a simple beauty in the clear work of mother nature, hanging from tree branches, that’s so peaceful.  Our acrylic collection taps into that same clarity and simplicity — allowing whatever they are paired with to shine while at the same time quietly calling attention to themselves.  It’s almost enough to make us look forward to another ice storm.  But just almost.

Finally, we’re done with January!  Even with days off for the New Year and Martin Luther King’s birthday, these last 31 days have been endless and dare we say, a little depressing.  And still, the next two months stretch out ahead in a sea of cold, dreary days.  Oh boy, now we’re making it worse.  But it’s kind of true.  Wouldn’t it be great if winter lasted for just one month?  Then you could cram a White Christmas, sparkly New Year, some ice skating, snow man building and skiing into a four-week sprint rather than what can at times feel like a horribly slow slog. It’s so important to try to bring as much color into your life during these bleak-ish days.  We just adore our ceramic vases and while neutrals always have their place, why not go bold with crimson?  These richly colored vessels come In such a fabulous variety of organic shapes and look so welcoming when clustered together, brimming with the flora of your choice.  Between the deep hues and the flowers, you just might fool yourself into thinking that spring is right around the corner.  But even if it’s not, you are sure to be cheered right up.

Stashing Away Temptation

Featured

After the indulgence of the holiday season, and the decadence of New Year’s Eve, it’s customary to slam on the brakes and do a little diet reassessment. Some people go the cleanse route or embrace a new fitness regimen or cease eating anything cooked beyond 115 degrees. Well, not us. As much as we do our best to stick to healthy, balanced meals we’re suckers for the occasional sweet treat. (Ok, maybe not that occasional).  Anyway, the point is that while we’re sweet tooths, we’re also grateful to be able keep our cookies stored away (out of tempting sight) in our very own canisters. Perfect for protecting a batch of Toll House from the midnight munchies or stashing many pots worth of Darjeeling leaves, these jars are both rustic and sophisticated and complement any kitchen counter — just remember, if you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar, please save some for us!

You’d probably have to be living on Mars to be spared from the kind of insane weather systems that have been plaguing this planet. When Moscow is warmer than Atlanta, you know things are out of whack!  Sub-zero temps, paired with snow and ice, are a lot to take and while we’re not going to start talking about global warming, clearly this isn’t “normal.” Or maybe it’s the “new normal?” Whatever the reason, the only plus side is that moment right after the snowfall. Not when it’s coming down faster than any plow can handle and not after neighborhood dogs have been let out.  We’re talking about the sweet spot of freshly fallen flakes when being outside feels like you’re surrounded by a glittering blanket.  Our white accents bring to mind that sense of pure peace and can imbue a home with a calm on even the most stressful of days…like when day three of being snowbound brings an acute case of cabin fever.  So, take a deep breath, exhale and think white thoughts.

There is nothing like turning the page of the calendar (or clicking the “+” on the IPhone) to think about a fresh start.  With the New Year just around the corner, resolutions are on everyone’s mind.  Whether it’s being more mindful, losing a few pounds, becoming a vegetarian or finally reading Anna Karenina, now is the time to put those goals on paper and really give them a shot.  But before tackling any big changes, it’s important to celebrate!  We love a good party and obviously New Year’s Eve is the night for fun, friends and cheer.  Our chic little drink tables look great anywhere…between chairs, at the end of a sofa or in a little sliver of space just crying out for that special something.  And of course they are perfect for those flutes filled with bubbly!  So raise a glass and toast to new beginnings.  Happy New Year!!

Hearth for the Holidays

Can it be? Yes, it can. It’s Christmastime! We’re still trying to figure out how we got here so quickly. Is it because Thanksgiving was so late? Or because we’re all getting older and time flies no matter what and no matter when? Whatever the reason, the truth is inescapable: ‘Tis the season to be jolly. Today marks the start of the Christmas-New Year’s travel season with some heading over the meadow and through the woods to stay with loved ones, while others prepare to play Host with the Most. Either way, a cozy, but stylish, vibe is mandatory and our fireplace accents ensure just that. With both streamlined and organic options our styles suit any hearth. Just remember to clean the chimney — you wouldn’t want Santa to show up covered in soot. Have a safe and merry Christmas!

Making Bigger Changes

Featured

When it comes to décor changes, sometimes it’s easier to get excited about the small stuff.  Let’s face it, undertaking a home furnishings overhaul is challenging for some and exciting for others.  For those who get a bit squeamish over the slightest tweak, enhancing a room with small accents is an easier adjustment than committing to larger, statement pieces.  But there’s really nothing to be scared of, especially when there are so any ways to steer the feel of a space.  We realized it’s been forever since we gave our case goods a little love, so why not now?  With a broad range of looks, each one totally current but always timeless, there is truly something for everyone.  With the new year just around the corner, don’t be skittish – make that change!

Warm breezes, crashing waves, azure waters this is the time of year when dreams of temperate climes and exotic cocktails clash with twinkling Christmas trees and roaring fireplaces.  Both are wonderful in their own way but we can’t help but have ocean blues on our minds, thanks to some fantastic Portuguese finds.  These pieces bring a handcrafted earthiness to fine porcelain and transport us back to the sights, smells and feel of our trip to Portugal.  Who says have to choose between the snow and the surf?  We like them both and even better, at the same time!

Hide Multitaskers

You don’t have to live in tight quarters to appreciate multi-functionality.  A dining room doubles as a library.  A captain’s bed provides much needed storage.  A writing desk converts to a table for two.  Whether you’re furnishing the smallest of studio apartments or the grandest of chateaux, versatility is key and our hide poufs and stools are a perfectly chic example of flexibility.  Their luxe looks are only enhanced by the varied roles they can play.  Pull up a pouf and join the chit-chat going on on the sofa.  Place a tray on a bench and provide a party perch for drinks.  Or use both as an ottoman for tired feet.  They play so many roles – and deliver a fabulous performance in every one!

No Frost Bite with “Fur”

If you see fall can you send her back to us?  Thanks.  We’re not sure what’s going on, but this week has been really cold in the northeast.  We’re talking first snowfall cold.  Okay, there was little accumulation, but still.  It’s just so strange when the leaves have turned from green to golden and are just starting to fall when all of a sudden they’re dusted with white.  Anyway, there’s no sense in trying to control the uncontrollable.  Really, it’s best just to accept and embrace it.  Speaking of embracing, our faux fur throws are the perfect thing to curl up with during this shivery time.   Keep Aunt Ida’s crocheted afghan on the top shelf of the linen closet and let the dog snuggle with that fleece blanket – we’re staying cozy and chic at the same time!  Bring it, winter.

Avoiding the Magazine Pile-Up

Although reports of print media’s death are not exaggerated, we believe in doing what we can to save it.  Ok, obviously we’re all for online communication – we’re blogging for heaven’s sake.  But there’s nothing that can replace the experience of flipping through a magazine, tearing out pages that inspire us or sinking into the couch with a pile of shelter porn on a rainy Sunday.  Therein lies the problem…the pile!  Mags do tend to accumulate and rainy, plan-free Sundays are hard to come by.  But until that stormy day comes around, what do you do with the aforementioned pile?  Here is the answer: our terrific looking magazine holders!  So fabulous and classic, they suit any décor and we just love the touch of equestrian-chic – just fill them with House Beautiful, Elle Décor, Architectural Digest, Vogue and W.  Now all you have to do is pray for rain.

Tray Entertaining

A funny thing happened on our way to buy Halloween candy – we ran right into the Christmas decorations!  We couldn’t believe it. Next to the bags of Kit Kats and M&Ms were stacks of red and green lights, packs of “snow” and boxes of ornaments.  What is going on?  It seems like time is flying faster and faster but really, it’s just that we’re embarking on seven months of holidays.  Think about it – there is something to celebrate every month until June!  Anyway, a packed calendar means there will be plenty of entertaining going on and now is the time to get prepared.  Our Carillo and Silver Leaf trays are just perfect for delivering flutes of bubbly and passing around the canapés.  They come in sets of three and make such chic accents, it would really be a shame to wait for a holiday to show them off.  Hmmmn, Election Day dinner party anyone?

Making the Most of the Mantel

Featured

Weather-wise we’ve been really lucky so far this fall.  It’s hard to believe that just a year ago the east coast was being pelted my Hurricane Sandy.  The rebuild came quickly to some while others are still repairing their lives and their homes.  Obviously home is where our heart is and our thoughts go out to everyone still in the throes of recovering, especially now as temps are starting to fall and feeling safe and warm is more important than ever. A cozy fireplace is the perfect place to start.  Nothing beats a crackling fire, but we like our firesides to be as great looking when the logs are lit as when they are not.  These bottles are fantastic accents for the mantel and, unlike their round-bottomed cousins, their shape makes them perfect for what’s usually a shallow space.  So pretty!  Next week we’ll show off our fireplace screens.  And maybe buy some logs…

How much is a person supposed to take?  Oh wait, did you think we were talking about real life?  No, no.  Reality can definitely be too much sometimes which is why escaping into high-stakes and intrigue is such fun.  We couldn’t get over the final episode of Breaking Bad and the premiere of Homeland’s season two, could you?  (Don’t worry, no spoilers here!) Add Scandal, The Black List, Hostages and no wonder DVRs are at capacity with thrills and chills. We could use a few sitcoms to balance out all this drama, but then again, we love knots!

We Love Paris in the Fall

One of the major advantages of spending so much of our time traveling for work is the ability to blur the line between business and pleasure. On the one hand that can mean we’re never able to completely disconnect, but on the other it means finding inspiration wherever we are. Recently we put a cap on a passage to India with a few days in Paris. While the two places offer their own wonderful, contrasting elements of stimulation there is nothing like the City of Light to revive the soul. With wonderful wine, fabulous food and of course breathtaking beauty, what’s not to love? Allow us to share some of our favorite spots.

Always Black and White

Clean and simple, but always chic and modern, black and white is a classic that’s never outdated.  Just flip through the pages of any fashion mag and you’ll see just how contemporary the timeless pairing, along with their cousin gray, can be.  This yin and yang isn’t limited to the runway or the closet – it looks just as fresh and on-trend in the home. Our garden stools are anything but precious, whether used as extra seating, a drinks table or a perch for weary dogs (we mean feet, not pooches!).  As the weather cools, these next few weeks are your last chance to enjoy them alfresco.  But not to worry, they look just as fab indoors, adding a bit of graphic flair no matter what the surrounding décor and serving as a great seasonal reminder that before long the garden will be back in full, colorful bloom.

Standing At Attention

Featured

Our media saturated world makes it so easy to be envious.  You can’t turn on the television, pass a newsstand or click a link without confronting the lives of the uber-fortunate.  From the “taste” of the Kardashians or a Real Housewife to the Royals or a House Hunter, there is something for everyone.  Who wouldn’t covet a closet as big as a two-car garage (but a lot more glam) or a great room that makes the average great room look, well, average?  But even if a home isn’t a Million Dollar Listing, there’s no reason it shouldn’t feel like a personal palace.  And for those whose abodes are spacially challenged, finding appropriately proportioned touches is crucial. That’s one of the reasons we love these stand-up accessories.  Just like a tall center piece at a party, they’re dramatic without being dense and pack a tasteful punch while taking up just a bit of surface space.  Offering a fabulous mix of textures, shapes and materials, they give any interior a unique sprinkle of spice. Whether standing solo or clustered in groups, they’re sure to spark some conversation and maybe inspire just a little envy of their own.

Bring in the Beach

Featured

Well, this is it.  The last two weeks of summer when seemingly the entire world is on vacation.  One of the greatest pleasures of time away from home is experiencing so many unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells and tastes. So to all the vacationers, enjoy.  And for all the working stiffs who will be knee-deep in the familiar, it’s time to think of ways to feel that same charge you get from traveling without the luxury of actually going anywhere.  Of course when you think summer you think beach, which is great if 1) you already live on a coastline or 2) you will be visiting someone who does.  But if you don’t and you won’t, the beautiful moody blues of our Oslo ceramic collection will have you feeling the salt spray on your face and the sand between your toes. Okay, that’s a stretch but they will really bring a beachy feel to the most land locked of spaces.  So put on your flip flops, pour a glass of rosé and boil up some lobsters.  Just don’t get too carried away and light a bonfire – remember,  you’re inside!

Bookended

Featured

What are you reading?  Don’t you love that question? Summer is prime reading time and always has been.  But the relationship to turning those pages changes over time.  Remember your book list in elementary school?  Knowing that the first day of classes was looming and you still needed to get to know Huck Finn and all those Little Women?  Then you grow up and the only person telling you what to read is you.  What a luxury! To have a few moments on vacation to get lost in story and characters – hopefully while lying in a hammock and sipping lemonade.  True bliss.  And when those relaxing days transition to the reality of fall, those treasured tales need to take their place on your shelves.  Sure many of us find e-reading to be super convenient, but there’s something about cracking open a binding, or throwing a squishy paperback into a beach bag, that feels just a little more satisfying than pushing a button.  Plus, we love displaying our favorite reads.  These handsome bookends are sure to motivate you to invest in the real thing – when was the last time you put your Kindle on a shelf?  So, what are you reading?

Mirror, Mirror

Featured

Remember when you thought the sun was your friend?  Sometimes ignorance really can be bliss, until it’s not and you learn the hard way to slather on the sunscreen and put on a big floppy hat.  But even with those precautions, most of us can’t help getting a hint of summer color and admit it, we all feel just a bit prettier with that whisper of tan.  When the cold weather comes and drains your face of any light, the last thing you want to do is confront your winter pallor.  And when you do happen to walk by your reflection, you shake your head and just keep going.  But now is the time when what greets you in the mirror looks a little healthier (even if officially it’s not).  We don’t advocate vanity, but please enjoy your tawny glow while you can.  It will soon go the way of clam bakes, lemonade and ice cream. (Unless of course spray tanning is your thing.  We don’t judge).  Some of our most stunning reflectors beg the question, “mirror, mirror on the wall….”

Bubbly Fun

We love juxtaposition.  Turning the expected into something un, balancing the seriousness of a classic with the effervescence of whimsy, while always keeping things fresh and modern.  These bubble lamps capture that feeling so perfectly.  What says fun than bubbles?  Blowing bubbles, a glass of bubbly, bubble baths, bubble gum = happy.  Here the playful shape is kept in mod check via a mid-century vibe that would complement a more traditional scheme or work in tandem with fab contemporary pieces.  Either way they’re sure to provoke both a double-take and a smile.

Winter Dreams

Featured

Remember last winter?  Or rather, remember when you were cold?  It seems unfathomable now that we ever whined about inclement weather systems.  Snow, sleet, icy days when you curse at your heavy coat and have to pile on all those layers – doesn’t that seem like a distant memory?  We are sweltering in the northeast and unlike parts of the country that are actually equipped to handle all this heat and humidity, we find ourselves hacking our way through the burning asphalt jungle, hoping the subway car we choose or the cab we hail is actually air conditioned.  We promise never to complain about the cold again!  (Okay, our fingers were crossed when we said that, but still, we’ll do our best.)  But, like everything else in life, this too shall pass and in fact there will be a day when we’re shivering and just want to cozy up to a warm fire with cocoa and board games at the ready.  We’re going to crank the a/c, close our eyes and pretend that time is now!  Hmmmn, what would our dream fireplace look like?

Americas MartDid you have a relaxing holiday weekend?  We hope so!  Ours was great.  While of course we’re patriotic and took a bit of time to celebrate, there was work to be done – we had to prepare for our July trip to Atlanta for the bi-annual Gift and Home Furnishings Market.  It’s always a treat for us to reconnect with friends while introducing our latest and greatest pieces and this trip is no exception.  Please stop by and say “hey.”   We’re at Americasmart Building 1, Space 14-E-10 until Wednesday and can’t wait to see you – and maybe do just a little showing off. See you soon!

Fourth of July Pride

Featured

Summer is in full swing and with the fourth of July right around the corner, we’re thinking about our nation’s birthday!  This is prime vacation time when everyone is gearing up for outdoor fun, grilling and fireworks.  Don’t get us wrong, we love a good party, but it’s also a chance to take a minute and think about the principles upon which our country was founded.  And this week was a perfect example of freedom at work.  No matter your personal or political position you can’t deny the power of democracy, or the strength and tenacity of Edie Windsor she is a perfect example of what it means to be part of the land of the free and the home of the brave.  One of the things that makes us so proud is that our Weiman line is American made.  While we obviously embrace a global decorative spirit, there is something so solid about building the foundation of a home with upholstered pieces crafted right here in the USA.  Happy 237th birthday America – you’re looking pretty good for your age!

Back to the Beach

Featured

Do you know what today is?  It’s the summer solstice!  In other words, the longest day of the year and the official start of having fun in the sun. Most grown-ups are working stiffs, but it’s almost impossible to shake the youthful school’s-out-for-summer feeling.  Everything seems just a little lighter.  Deadlines still loom but don’t carry as much stress as they do in, say, February.  As the weekend approaches, you don’t fantasize about hibernating with cookies and a good book, but plan barbeques, softball games and our favorite, a day at the beach.  After last year’s Superstorm Sandy there was a touch-and-go tension as to whether the east coast would rebound.  Things may not be 100% perfect, but wow, we are really impressed by the results born out of so much hard work, devotion and love.  Resort towns, boardwalks, businesses and beaches are ready for us and we can’t wait to celebrate the surf.  We’ll be packing a picnic, riding waves and searching the sand for shells.  Even if you’re not Atlantic bound, you can still have your own beachy fun.  How about a DIY at-home clambake?  A game of Kadima in the back yard?  And most of all, our collection of shell inspired accents!  They bring a whiff of salty air into the most landlocked of locales.  And best of all, they’re sand-free! Happy summer!

Inspiring Travels

Olá!  Guess where we are.  Give up?  We’re in Lisbon doing what we love most, seeking.  We’ve discovered some amazing artisans whose incredibly special ceramic handiwork blows us away.  At the same time, we’re soaking up all kinds of inspiration, getting ideas and taking in the fabulous culture.  Breaking out of routine is so important when your goal is to awaken your senses, stay fresh, current and always challenged.

We love the contrasting iron work on these balconies.  There manages to be tension and harmony all at the same time.  So romantic, no?

A Lisbon signature, these sidewalk mosaics are just fantastic.  In patterns both organic and geometric, we flipped over the dynamic shapes and phenomenal craftsmanship.  Plus, doesn’t Wendy’s willowy shadow look so cool against the structured design?

We don’t want to gush or cop to being just a little star-struck, but Ms. McCarthy is a refreshing hoot who tells it as she sees it and doesn’t demur or apologize – she’s our kind of girl! So a big shout-out , and an even bigger thank you, to The Jenny McCarthy Show. It may have wrapped for now, but catching up on VH1.com is super easy and here’s hoping they bring her, and our Capri chair, back for more!

Multi-purpose and Multi-talented

Featured

Remember when talking on the phone meant sitting in a chair tethered to a hardwired Trimline and simply having a conversation?  The idea that you couldn’t move around freely while doing umpteen other things at the same time (unloading the dishwasher, picking up after the kids, making your bed) seems so archaic, no?  Of course it does!  We live in a multi-purpose world where not a minute is wasted and we want the most out of everything.  Just take a look at your smartphone if you’re doubtful – email, phone, calendar, photos, GPS etc, etc.  So it’s no wonder that we believe in casting some of our most versatile, smart and chic stars in multiple roles. Place a tray on a bench and it becomes a cocktail table.

Pull up an ottoman and it’s another seat for a fun catch-up between friends.

And in keeping with the faster is better ethos of our modern times, these upholstered must-haves are available in six weeks in our quick-ship fabric or COM – how great is that?

On Mother Nature and Memorial Day

Featured

OKMother Nature never ceases to amaze.  It can be the sunniest of days and then pow, we are reminded that there is so much we don’t control.  Just as everyone is looking forward to the start of summer, a tornado can touch down and wreak more havoc than anyone could really predict.  The idea that in just minutes, whole neighborhoods can be reduced to just a pile of bricks is unfathomable to most.  And given what home means to us, it’s just that much more poignant.  And there is no way to ever grasp why innocent children become victims of the temperamental natural world.  Our hearts go out to all of the people in Oklahoma who have found themselves at the mercy of a severe tornado not once, but three times in the last 15 years.  It’s at times like this that we can’t help but feel powerless and small.  So this weekend, while commemorating those who gave their lives in the name of protecting America’s liberties, let’s also take a moment to think of those who have lost so much in the heartland of the very country those brave members of the Armed Forces never cease to protect.

Take a Garden Seat

Featured

Have you taken a look at the pollen report?  It is crazy!  Over half of the US is hitting medium-high numbers with whole swaths coming in at record highs.  It’s enough to make sufferers wish for an air- cleansing downpour.  And it’s so unfortunate because the best thing about spring is finally being able to head outside after months of hibernation.  Whether you’re hiking or cheering on a little league game or just reading the paper on a park bench, no one wants to be a shut-in in May.  It’s also prime gardening time – trowels are out, bulbs are ready and green thumbs are getting dirty (even if they’re hopped up on anti-histamines and rubbing their eyes with their soiled gloves.)

Our garden stools are so great looking and come in so many organic shapes they’d enhance even the prettiest planted patch.

But they don’t need to stay outside. We think they make the perfect perch, side table or even a place to place your feet at the foot of your fave chair.  What a relief – you won’t bring on an allergy attack to enjoy them.  Of course if you think they look best out of doors, that’s fine too, just make sure you check the pollen report before you take a seat.

Vases for Mother’s Day and Every Day

When was the last time you gave someone flowers?  Think about it.  What is nicer than surprising a special person with a gorgeous bunch of their favorite flora?  Like so many things, we wait for the calendar to tell us it’s a day for a bouquet when in fact, it’s even more thoughtful to bestow a sweet smelling gift when it is least expected.  So while we all make a mental note to be more spontaneous in the flower department, there is a day coming up this weekend that must be celebrated appropriately.  Whether you’re a spouse, a child, a parent or just an admiring friend, it’s time to give the mothers in your life a shout-out!  Unfortunately, much like Valentine’s Day, prices at your florist will be going through the roof tomorrow, but what’s a little Mother’s Day rip-off when it can put a huge smile on a mom’s face?  We have some new vases that are truly terrific, and of course so much chicer than the keepsake watering can your online floral service provides.  So this Sunday show any one of the mothers you know a little flowery love – and then pick a random date to do it again, it will feel so good.

Sprigs of fresh mint

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Home Sweet Home

We’re baaack!  We had a fantastic time at market and it was so great to see colleagues and friends – we’re already thinking about our October trip!  But, even so, we were pretty ready to come home. Being away from loved ones for extended periods is an occupational hazard we all accept, but after awhile it’s so important to connect with our families.  It makes us happier, grounded and satisfied which only serves to make our work even better!

airportOf course sometimes life (and furloughs by air traffic controllers) can mess with the best laid plans. And so it was that after our time in High Point, it took us a bit longer to get back to spouses, kids and friends. But after our collective journeys, we have to say, there is, in fact, no place like home.  Not to rest on our laurels or anything, but we feel the need to smell the roses (how’s that for a horticultural metaphor mash-up?!).

Spring 13As our seasonal allergies can confirm, spring has sprung.  We’re going to take this week’s post to acknowledge it, look at the pretty flowers and bake up a little something using rhubarb, a favorite seasonal specialty.  This mixed berry-rhubarb pudding cake is adapted from Gourmet, April 2007.  It’s super easy, looks so sunny and cheerful and is the perfect way to say, “Honey, we’re home!033

Ingredients
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/3 cup plus 1/2 cup sugar
1 cup chopped fresh rhubarb stalks
1 cup blackberries, halved if large
1 cup chopped fresh strawberries
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1/2 cup whole milk
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions

Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 400°F. Butter an 8-inch square glass or ceramic baking dish.

Stir together water, cornstarch, and 1/3 cup sugar in a medium saucepan, then stir in rhubarb. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, then let simmer, stirring occasionally, 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in strawberries.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and remaining 1/2 cup sugar in a bowl.

Whisk together egg, milk, butter, and vanilla in a large bowl, then whisk in flour mixture until just combined.

Reserve 1/2 cup fruit mixture, then add remainder to baking dish and pour batter over it, spreading evenly. Drizzle reserved 1/2 cup fruit mixture over batter. Bake until a wooden pick/cake tester inserted into center of cake comes out clean of crumbs, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pan on a rack 5 minutes before serving.

Yield: 8 servings

Spring Market Interlude Sneak Peek

Market Spring 2013 Showroom PhotoIt’s that time again – we’ve barely had time to catch our breath and now we’re in full market mode! It’s all good though, we have a lot to show for ourselves. We are obsessed with these amazing leather trays, boxes, ice buckets and more all with an oh-so-classy equestrian vibe. Gorgeous, right?

And of course we wouldn’t be us without offering up some fab key accessories for just that clever bit of oomph.

But wait, there’s more! Our new accent cocktail and side tables blend a terrific juxtaposition of materials, they’re sure to lend a sophisticated twist. (We love how the Hex side table

Long story short, we are so excited to present our collections and can’t wait to see you. As always, you can find us in G265 in the IHFC. Until then…

Ahoy! It’s Spring

Featured

While no one likes to live a predictable life, it’s sort of nice to be able to count on certain things.   Like a turkey on Thanksgiving, a countdown to midnight on New Year’s Eve, over-priced roses on Valentine’s Day and nautical styles for spring!  Honestly, check out the fashion mags and bloggers every March and you are sure to find a “story” on the classic blue and white striped French sailor shirt.

French Sailor ShirtAnd the thing is, it’s never boring. Aside from that iconic tee, designers are always able to bring a fresh perspective and a new twist to a time-honored theme.  And we are no exception.  Check out our rope and jute accessories. They manage to say “ahoy matey!” in a completely modern way.  Of course they’d look fabulous on land or sea.  If only we had a yacht to deck out.  The SS Interlude?  Now that has a nice ring to it!

A Tisket a Tasket and a Flourless Chocolate Cake

Featured

What a pious time it has been! Between the new Pope, holy week and Passover, many of the faithful have been very busy. As always, we’re steering clear of any religious conversations, but we’d be remiss not to take note of these springtime rites. Traditions and rituals can unite us, bringing together family and friends to observe and celebrate. You’d have to be hardhearted not to smile at the exuberant hats donned by the Easter parade-goers or the grass stains that seem to find their way to egg-hunting kids. And no matter your affiliation, there’s something so hopeful about a basket filled with cheerfully-hued jelly beans and shimmering foil-wrapped chocolate bunnies. Our baskets might be a little large to fill with sweets (well, not really if you are as confection-obsessed as some of us), but they make stunning accents – perfect for fireplace logs, blankets, towels, toys, magazines and anything else you need to stash neatly.

Meanwhile, all of this sweet talk has us hankering for something delish. This flourless chocolate cake recipe is a favorite for both Easter and Passover. Topped with pillows of whipped cream and juicy berries, it’s a harbinger of this season of rebirth. Enjoy and happy holidays!

Flourless Chocolate Cakefrom Nigella Bites, Nigella Lawson 2002
Ingredients-cake
9 ounces dark chocolate, preferably 70% cacao, rough chopped
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
6 eggs (2 whole, 4 separated)
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons orange-flavored liqueur, optional
Zest of one orange

Ingredients-cream & fruit topping
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons orange-flavored liqueur, optional
1/2 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder, for sprinkling (optional)
Two cups berries of your choice (optional)

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line the bottom of a 9″ springform cake pan with parchment paper.

Melt the chocolate either in a double boiler or a microwave, add the butter and let it melt in the warm chocolate.

Beat the 2 whole eggs and 4 egg yolks with 1/3 cup of the sugar, then whisk in add the chocolate mixture, the orange-flavored liqueur (optional) and the orange zest.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whisk the 4 egg whites until foamy, then gradually add the remaining sugar and whisk until the whites hold their shape but are not too stiff. Lighten the chocolate mixture with a dollop of egg whites, and then fold in the rest of the whites. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the cake is risen and cracked and the center is no longer wobbly. Cool the cake in its pan on a wire rack; the middle will sink as it cools.

Shortly before serving, place the still pan-bound cake on a cake stand or plate and carefully remove the sides of the pan from the cake. The cake will look slightly ragged and sunken.  It’s supposed to. Whip the cream until it’s soft and then add the vanilla and orange-flavored liqueur and continue whipping until the cream is firm but not too stiff. Fill the crater of the cake with the whipped cream, easing it out gently towards the edges of the cake.  Top either with a dusting of cocoa or fresh berries.

Yield: 8-10 slices

Curvy Conversation

Featured

So last week we were talking about the resurgence of the cocktail culture and profiled our fab drinks tables. But how can you have a get-together without offering the guests a place to sit? Our curvy sofas are as sexy to look at as the conversations they inspire. Think about it. A standard couch dictates a certain pose and a way of sitting that’s a bit more formal. But these sinewy numbers invite movement and interaction, twisting and turning. What better way to provoke an unexpected, chance encounter? We’re all for chemistry and these perches provide just the opportunity to turn a spark felt from across the room into fireworks. “Hi

there, what’s your sign?”

Have you hit the Winter Wall?  You know that mood you get in when, for the umpteenth day in a row, you’ve wrestled your kids (and yourself) into your puffy coat, searched the house in vain for two matching gloves and replaced the Kleenex pocket pack in your, well, pocket?  That’s the Winter Wall.  There is no getting around it and it happens every year in these last few weeks before spring when you realize just how tired you feel.  Then comes the news that you are about to lose an hour of much needed sleep.  What?  Yup, it’s already time to spring forward.  Okay sure, you’ll probably be a little tired on Monday while your body adjusts to daylight savings time, but it is going to be so worth it because it’s about to stay light longer and every day will get a little warmer!  That is great news since as coats get pushed to the back of the closet and windows are opened to let in the fresh air, you look around and realize your home has been hibernating too!  It’s time to lighten up and what better way than with a splash of the most revitalizing of non-colors – white!  These lamps have a clean, modern feel that have us dreaming about beach houses.  And while you won’t need to switch them on till later in the evening, they still brighten things up all day – bye, bye Winter Wall!

Totes to Stay or Go

There is nothing like a beautiful home.  Whether it’s an escape from the hustle and bustle of the workday, a seaside weekend retreat or a well-deserved respite after years of toil, we have the pieces to make any house a home.  It would follow then that we’re homebodies who love nothing more than to curl up in our cocoons and leave the outside world outdoors.  But that isn’t entirely true.  We travel farther than you’d imagine in order to bring back the very furnishings and accessories to help others feather their nests.  So it’s a little ironic that these terrific textured totes (incorporating jute, leather and denim) are among our favorite new discoveries – they actually inspire exploring and getting out and about.  They’re perfect for an overnight trip or a big day at the beach or, wait, who are we kidding?  We think they look amazing filled with fluffy towels by the pool or tub, loaded with logs by the fireplace, keeping the kids’ toys all in one place and so much more.  So, we’ll do the traveling and let everyone else enjoy their havens – but we’re taking one of each tote with us.

One Person’s Treasure…

Featured

We’re not big fans of clichés but there are times when they do the job perfectly.  Whether you believe in “out of sight, out of mind” or “absence makes the heart grow fonder”, we dare you to come up with a better way of succinctly describing your reaction to being away from a significant someone.  Of course our favorites hit closer to home, as in “wherever you hang your hat, that’s your home” and “home is where the heart is.”  Both are about feeling comfortable no matter what home means to you.  We’d prefer it be an actual structure that cries out for your personal touch, but we also really appreciate that for some, their sense of home might be informed by what they do for a living or the state of their personal life.  Maybe they move a lot and need to make new places feel familiar as quickly as possible.  Like those people who cozy up their hotel room with framed photos or an evocative scented candle.  Each person has those little things that make them feel connected, rooted and safe and oftentimes those knickknacks seem meaningless to anyone but them.  Hence another favorite cliché, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”  We don’t believe anyone should have to explain why, for example, a matchbook from a long-shuttered restaurant (good luck finding matchbooks these days anyway!) or a tiny be-ribboned lock of hair finds a prominent place on a bedroom dresser.   We think they are all treasures and should be treated as such.  Our glass boxes are the perfect showcase for those tiny mementos that bring you back to a special place or remind you of something wonderful, and their classic lines complement any style.  Protecting your treasures is a sure way to make sure they don’t wind up (in the) trash

The Feet Were Made for Talkin’

Who doesn’t like a good party?  We certainly do.  Whether you’re inviting or invited, few things are more fun than getting together with old friends, making new ones, sharing great food, even greater drink and letting the conversation flow.  But have you ever been to a dinner given by a control freak, sorry, we mean generous friend, who likes to kick off the evening’s fun by insisting her guests participate in various get-to-know-you games?  Apparently some people are so worried their party won’t come together on its own they need to come up with ways to ensure the fun.  We think socializing should be organic and natural.  We live in a pretty interesting world and there’s so much to talk about – movies, art, travel, work, love, food.  And don’t accuse us of being superficial, we left out the hot topics like world peace, politics and religion for a reason – they are a little risky when you are first introduced to someone!  But of course there’s always that time you get seated next to a bore who simply can’t/won’t hit the conversational ball back.  Maybe they’ve been living under a rock and haven’t had any experiences they want to share.  But that’s no reason to give up!  Look around you.  Does the host have a particularly cute dog?  How’s the view from the dining room window?  Still nothing?  Well, that’s why we love provocative accents!  They are the best kind of conversation pieces and these fabulous feet just scream, “Talk about me!” Your dinner party dud just has to respond.  And here’s an idea; if he doesn’t, use your own two feet to stand up, politely excuse yourself and walk to the bar for a refill.  Stopping to admire these tootsies first of course.

Brrrr.  Who’s cold?  If you are one of the lucky few not shivering through this week’s frigid temps, we are so jealous!  We’ve been experiencing our first real blast of winter this week and it is not fun.  You know how on those super sweltering dog days of summer you can’t imagine that you’ll ever wear a turtleneck again?  Well, we can’t imagine there will ever be a day so steamy that we’ll want to strip down to our skivvies.  Right now we’re doing everything to stay warm and toasty and with all this hibernation we have found ourselves spending a little (too much?) time in the kitchen cooking hearty soups, stews, skillet meals and other stick-to-your-ribs fare – not exactly the best way to shed the holiday lbs resolutions were designed to address!  One way to keep your mouth busy (without eating that leftover lasagna straight from the pan, not that we’d ever do that…) is to sip something hot and soothing.

Our tea jars are the perfect vessels for coffees, cocoas and, well, teas.  In such a wide range of looks, there is sure to be one that works in any kitchen or pantry but really, they’re so attractive they’d add a little something to any room in the house.  Don’t you think?

For now we’re focusing on the kitchen – join us for a cuppa and remember, summer is just six months away!  Stay warm!

Provoking with Texture

Featured

Shaking things up is one of those little life necessities that inspires love and hate.  One person’s rut is another’s “comfort zone” but ultimately, to achieve a satisfying existence, you can’t just tread water. And really, how boring would life be if it was always predictable, easy and smooth?  Of course no one courts hardship, but sometimes beauty can grow out of rougher times whether self-imposed or inflicted. When it comes to feathering a nest, it’s natural to gravitate towards the familiar.  Home is where the heart is and don’t we all want to feel the love in ours?  But sometimes venturing out of the ordinary allows a new kind of beauty to stake its claim.

Take these gorgeous ceramic vases and vessels that manage to be both organic and modern.  Though most of us are accustomed to the easy touch of thrown pottery, every unique piece of our new handmade collection brings with it a provocative texture and an element of sophistication and fashion that provides just enough challenge to provoke a fresh appreciation and maybe, just shake things up.

New Additions for the New Year

Featured

January is such a funny month.  On the one hand, the page turning of the New Year offers resolutions and fresh starts.  But on the other hand, winter has only just begun and we find ourselves craving a little boost of energy, a little metaphorical sunshine.  That’s why the timing of the The International Gift and Home Furnishings Market in Atlanta is so perfect.  We’re here presenting so many fabulous new looks – all of which are sure to help you refresh, renew and put that much needed spring in your step…until spring.

How great are our Lamori Nesting Tables?  Use them snuggled together next to the couch, split them apart and scatter them throughout the house – either way their versatility only matches their style.

We’ve had so much success with our teak and resin pieces we had no choice but to expand the collection. Whether used in a table top accessory or an actual table, this mix of materials is the chicest of hits.

Happy New Year All Year

Featured

How was your New Year’s Eve?  Glittering, romantic and fabulous?  Yeah, neither was ours.  But here’s a little secret; there’s no reason why that one night has to bear the burden of all that glamorous pressure!  Wouldn’t it be more fun to choose random evenings on the calendar to dress to impress, rev up your play list, pop the corks, serve a wonderful meal and set the candles to flickering?  We think so.  And we also think these candle stands are the perfect place to start.

And to finish?  What says decadent luxury more than mousse au chocolat?  (Come on, it sounds so much more elegant in French!)  Your guests will never know how effortless this recipe is – and isn’t that the best kind of elegance?  Here’s to all good things for 2013.  Now, let the celebrating begin!

Ingredients
1 cup good quality, dark chocolate chips
1 egg, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract OR liqueur of your choice
1 cup heavy cream

Directions
Place chocolate chips, egg and vanilla/liqueur in blender and chop until chips are small and pebbly. Set aside and remove the little stopper in the blender’s lid, replace lid.
Heat cream in a small sauce pan until very hot but do not boil. It should be steaming and there should be little bubbles around the sides.
Turn on the blender and pour hot cream through the lid’s hole in a slow, steady stream. Blend until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth.
Pour into small ramekins, custard cups or demi tasse cups and chill until firm.  About 2-4 hours.  We used 4 ounce ramekins and this recipe served 5.
Yield 4-5 depending on cup size.

Our Newtown Neighbors

Featured

During what is supposed to be ”the most wonderful time of the year” filled with family, friends, resolutions and hope, our hearts are broken.  Last week’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary moved the nation to tears and we, as a company, were no exception.  With headquarters in Trumbull, Connecticut, Interlude Home is only 20 minutes from Newtown.  There is something about this area of the Nutmeg State that embodies the best of America – neighbors helping neighbors and communities coming together in good times and bad.  Sadly, this is one of the worst of times.  Like polite dinner guests, we don’t believe in discussing politics or religion in public.  But we do ask you to send your thoughts and prayers to those grieving families whose lives will never be the same and to give your own loved ones an extra hug this holiday season.  Take care, be well and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Eye of the Beholder

Featured

Art is in the eye of the beholder.  Think about it, have you ever been at a museum contemplating a Jackson Pollock painting only to overhear another exhibit goer proclaiming to his companion, “I could have done that!”?  Maybe you were moved by the passion informing the work or maybe you connected with the use of color or movement.  And then your reverie is broken by someone whose eye didn’t see what you saw, and didn’t feel what you felt.  But really, a response to any creative expression is completely subjective.  Who is to say what is good taste or bad?  Your neighbor’s choice of exterior paint color might offend your sensibilities but maybe she doesn’t approve of your landscaping.  No one is right or wrong. Of course we think our taste is pretty good and have a ton of new objets we like to think of as art.  Maybe the shapes speak to you in a deep, meaningful way.  Or maybe you appreciate the texture or maybe you just think they’d look good showcased in a prominent spot on a bookcase or resting just so on a coffee table. We think these pieces are fabulous.  And the gold?  Perfect for the holidays.  We’re sure you agree because of course you have great taste.  Even if we’re not judging.  Okay, maybe we are, but just a little.
